Turning Point

Tags :

When I returned from Canada, foremost on my mind was my living arrangements. Most of my belongings were in storage, and the rest were being utilised by my sons. Wanting to complete writing my next novel, and knowing it would be a hard ask to write and work full-time to pay the rent, I decided I would give house-sitting a go.

Little did I know what gifts this activity would deliver.

Predominantly, house-sits involve caring for pets. Remembering what had happened with Archie was enough to make me feel a little apprehensive. But, the turning point arrived when I saw that I could give something back; to my friends, to strangers, to humanity in snapshots of time and place. I saw the upside of alleviating one or more pets from having to live away from the comfort of their own home, while their owners took a leave of absence.

Each house-sit presents another pet with their own personality. There are licks on the face upon waking. The tilt of a dogs head to show they are listening. I get to observe their innocence and play, as a leaf blows by in the wind. Then there is the frivolity of a game which adds laughter to my day. Their company is indeed a gift.

Yet there is more:

Part of their care includes daily walks, a minimum of one per day. Getting outdoors in the rain or sunshine, cold or heat, has resulted in a clear head which assists my writing ten-fold.

Here’s a snapshot of today’s adventures, in the Gippsland country town of Korumburra. The pooch and I embraced the wind, rain, cloudy skies and moments of sunshine, amongst nature’s treasure troves.

Whether you’re a writer or not, do you enjoy walks in nature? And do you find it clears your head too? Thanks for reading. May you enjoy your next wondrous adventure outdoors.

2017 Year of the Rooster

Tags :

february 2017

Chinese astrology is said to be more than 5000 years old, and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. It’s China’s longest and most important holiday of their year, and spans 2 weeks.

Were you were born 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 or 2005? If so, you are said to be kind-hearted, loyal, beautiful, hard-working, honest, and sometimes gullible, arrogant and wild.

It didn’t surprise me to read that this is not a year to take risks, and to be clear with our intentions regarding career, money and love. After last year’s intense energies—it was a Monkey year—it makes sense to be wiser and listen to our internal guidance.

Unlike a 9-year numerological cycle, the Chinese year follows a 12-year cycle that is represented by various animals.

Here’s a couple of fun facts:

  • The rooster is the only bird in the Chinese zodiac

  • The rooster is also known as the chicken or the cock

  • The map of China is shaped like a rooster

  • It’s considered good luck to cleanse the home at the beginning of the Chinese New Year—that’s January 28—to ward off any present stale chi, and invite luck into the home and its occupants.

  • During the festival people greet each other with auspicious phrases, sharing the vibe of good luck… what a great idea!

For further fun facts head to Google.

For every animal year, there is also an accompanying element. 2017 is the element of fire and is yang. It’s energy is masculine and attributes much enthusiasm and creativity—good for writers, okay, all creatives! ahem… It’s also associated with the colour red = lucky. The opposite is it can highlight aggression and impatience.

Interestingly, one of the organs associated with the element of fire is the heart. Friends and I recently chatted about the importance of communicating from a heart space, instead of the head. And too, being heart-centred in business instead of being focused on the money.

The last Year of the Rooster in the element of fire was 1957. So, if you’re like me and haven’t experienced this yet, we can expect to fulfill our dreams when we’re prepared to do the work.

What work will you be doing? Do you feel you have a clear direction and you’re just going for it? Or, will you wait and see where life takes you? Were you born in the year of the rooster? Share in the comments below.

Will you be like the rooster and strut your stuff? — With confidence not arrogance, of course 😉

Holiday Time for the Woman Writer

Tags :

My heartfelt gratitude to MK for sharing his creative photography ♥

It’s holiday time! YAY!

To be honest, I wasn’t planning on taking a vacation this year. My plan was to invest all available work time into my business. However, the Universe, fate, or as some may call it—my destiny, had other ideas.

I’m not about to launch into what transpired (not yet anyway) however, what will eventuate is partly a holiday escape of the literary kind… totally my scene altogether!

You can just feel another book opportunity developing, can’t you? I’ll be journaling for sure and taking a few happy snaps!

I’ll be visiting one of the top 10 literary cities in the world… read last week’s post to find out what the rankings were from the National Geographic Traveller (Sept. 2011)

Which of the top 10 Literary Cities do you think I’m fortunate to be visiting?

Here’s a hint:

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in […] as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for […] is a moveable feast.”
― Ernest Hemingway

It peaked my interest to learn which writers I might find in this city. When I typed “seeking a list of […] writers” into the Google search engine I noted a film strip near the top of the page. When I scrolled through this film strip that listed ‘writers frequently mentioned on the web’ I found only 6 women as opposed to 45 men.

Much has been said and written about women who have struggled over the centuries to be heard and recognised for their written prowess. Many wrote anonymously and some hid their identity by using a male name in an attempt to get their written work ‘out there’. Thankfully writers such as Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Helen Keller, Agatha Christie, Maya Angelou, J.K. Rowling—love them all—and others, shared their voice and were fortunate to be seen and heard. I’m sure perseverance and determination were two strengths these women used to see them succeed.

So, how do women fair today?

It is said women are more likely to be noticed by women editors and reviewers. Why not men? Organisations such as the Stella Prize and VIDA are making an effort to bring this back into balance. Check out this article which highlights the unfair treatment of women writers.

I wonder how it is that men can be deemed more creative than women? I think not. Equality is important to me… after all, we are all connected and each plays a vital role in the scheme of the whole!

What is your opinion on this subject… and how do you fair in the field of writing? Remember to guess which city I’ll be visiting and leave your comment below… I look forward to joining you in the conversation.

Free Promotion

Tags :

Welcome to the world of KDP Select, where one has the opportunity to offer free promotion of their eBook! This post is a continuation of last weeks post Submission. Here I will reveal the scenario and what I learned from embracing this course of action.

The process was surprisingly revealing and involved surrender, release and letting go of my eBook with a free promotion over 5 days. The easiest way to explain this is to segment it into stages.

I’d reached a point where I was ready to take the next step. My eBook was sitting stagnant in the slush pile of Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. While I am hugely grateful my eBook had sold 31 copies since its launch date in July 2014—to date, it occurred to me that the time had come for it to be seen by a larger audience.

I became addicted to watching the number of units downloaded, it reached to 257 on the first day. Then I was in awe of my author ranking dropping from almost #1,000,000 to #971 come day two. Yet, by day 4 it had risen again into the thousands. I can best describe this experience as a roller-coaster ride of emotion, which spurred me on to make sure I covered all the avenues of marketing I had available.

What became clear was I recognised the paradox of living in two worlds. There is the 3 dimensional egotistical vortex which I allowed myself to be drawn into. Then there is the 5 dimensional world of love, forgiveness and gratitude, where intuitively and at my heart I know why I am here, and detachment of all things is part of this.

Stage 4: OUTCOME

By the end of this process I wrote in my journal about how grateful I am that maybe one of the 597 people who downloaded my eBook may be inspired by my words, the words I’d felt inspired to write. It highlighted the truth that to assist another to write their story is worthwhile, and from this I came to appreciate my sense of self-worth.

I am one piece in the large jigsaw of humanity.

It’s not about the reviews, the ranking, or the number of units sold or given away, these are all by-products of the healing that took place in me when I wrote it in the first instance.

I am not what the outcome appears to be—I simply am.

I invite you to daydream on the photo below (taken from the same spot as in the post Submission). Imagine you are one of the trillions of sparkles that you see on the water. You have within you a bright shining gem to share with the world. Be brave and take the next step. I’ll be there in support of you all the way!

What was the last thing you gave away for free and what did you learn from this? Please share in the comments section.

Write to Heal and make your mark for life is worth living.
